  1. vocals these days seem trite and almost annoying ... or maybe it is just that vocals, outside of just regular popular much have always been kind of pointless. For musicians to write great music, and then to include great lyrics is like two big hurdles to surmount, and usually the lyrics drag down the music. I always think of Deep Purple's, Smoke On The Water, which at the time struck me as such a powerful cord progression, that the lyrics just made it bubble gum. Same with something like Money For Nothing .... What is wrong with instrumental music? I like instrumental jazz and rock a lot.
