Having to rely on the sanity of EVERYONE not to do this or want to do this is indeed a scary thought. We are at a point where one depressed, delusional, wrong-thinking person might do something like this and forget that even if they have a vaccine their survival still depends on everything else working, and there not being any mutated variations that will come back kill him/her too. I think we have about maybe 300 years of technology ahead of where our collective wisdom is, and that gap is only growing, while our wisdom seems to be falling behind because it is controlled by authoritarian plutocrats who really do not give a damn about the rest of us, and in fact pretty much contempt for the masses aside from slaves to do their bidding that machines cannot do yet. We cannot survive government by these kind of super-powerful and wealthy "kids" ... who remind me of William Campbell's ( I think? ) character Trelane on Star Trek's "The Squire Of Goths", a child with the lives of others in their hand.

>> The private sector has covered itself in glory while the public sector has covered itself in shame The reason we had such a mess with Covid-19 was because of a private sector fanatics President who made decisions based on not disrupting the stock market, and whose total ignorance - private sector ignorance, and intentional actions designed to undermine the government, like appointing DeJoy as Postmaster general and other government sabotages. This is a part of Sam's podcast and attitude I find really stupid and offensive ... pandering to the rich people by leaving out a major part of the story in order to further their private sector domination of life in America and our government.

@scorchtongue Any AI is going to be programed by human nature, and just like the government gets swayed over to fascism over time AI programming will end up full of little routines to make sure the it does not disrupt the political system ... in other words it will be someone's, the rich and powerful's tool or it will get shut off and back to the drawing board until it is. God save us from the naive optimists.
2
@scorchtongue I think there's a lot of things you don't see.
2
@scorchtongue I think you need to quit fearing into the future, back and think about the fundamentals, general AI or anything conscious is probably hundreds of years off, and not something we should do even if we could right now.

@scorchtongue > AI doesn't stay at a 'normal' civilizational level for long at all. Oh, really? And what AI are you talking about?
1
@scorchtongue > An AI smart enough to make a vaccine for a entirely new, deliberately weird, man-made virus has to be pretty damn smart. You referred to smart by using the word smart - so

@scorchtongue Yeah, and God is omnipotent ... so what? How does that happen? What does it mean? How does the AI define intelligence in order to reprogram itself? What if it creates a bug in its mind and kills itself?

@corb5654 > Stop demonising depression. I'n not I am demonizing trolls of a certain type, so I guess that made you defensive.

This is sensationalist BS, designed to sell science fiction books to dumb people.

33:25 - Just a smidge of feedback from a listener and subscriber - the "uumh" sound that Sam punctuates these discussions with is really annoying. It sound like like the sound someone makes when they are not really listening to another person. He does this all the time too.
