Or, if today you do not know what kind of capabilities you need to protect against missiles and you think your 1 or 2 "cats and traps" might be compromised and don't want to be stuck like a sitting duck with useless billions of dollars of airplanes unable to launch and on their way to the bottom of the sea, then you depend of VTOL aircraft. All that needs to happen is a pit or defect in the runway and a cats and traps carrier is all but useless.
