  2. Uh ... once someone starts to watch a TED talk, or any other You-Tube video, it is counted as a view, so the influence of hand-gestures here seems to be a bit irrelevant, no?? So, does that mean this is "fake-science"? I might hazard a guess that talks with more hand gestures give more opportunities for icon images that look interesting or exciting, and not to mention like the porn still frames, they have to pick a frame where there is some kind of "money shot" regardless of the denomination, be it porn, or cute face, interesting chart, or what we all know ... use audio-visual aids, bright colors, smile, etc ... the icon of the talk being the preview. Or one can look at this cynically like one can view a commercial or sales pitch ... when someone doesn't have a good product or anything to say they concentrate on BS. And the other side is that BS appeals to stupid people, so we have incentivized people to try to look and act stupid and be moved by stupid stuff ... like all the reality shows on TV that have gone on for many years now and nothing on any of them has ever been of any importance.

  4. Colbert is pretty smart. I'm impressed, I have not spend much time listening to him and just saw bits of his show previously. He is too smart to appeal to the ones who really need to understand the zen comedy that he creates, the ones who need it ... namely Republicans. They are not able to think so hard or to keep contradictory ideas in their heads.

  5. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Techno-idiots are taking over the human space. It is technology that fuels domination and slavery. Before we had technology people were pretty much free to go away from people who bugged them or acted anti-socially. Now technology has taken over all the land and resources and given control of them to the most obnoxious anti-social people who use others as tools to fight each other. Progress would consist of studying who we are and doing appropriate things instead of just moving forward faster and faster with ideas, most of which are stupid or bad, just so some group can make money and gain power. How about encouraging wisdom and making people happy?

  12. I don't really know if capitalism can be replaced ... it's like saying barter can be replaced, because capitalism is just abstracted or virtual barter. Or like saying language is just a means of communication, it can be replaced ... how? It is inherent in the game theoretical tit-for-tat relationships primates engage in. Some say our brains developed to do this ACCOUNTING. But, my point would be, since we do not live in a jungle, and in fact, do create our own jungles, that the wealthiest and powerful of us can create the world for the rest of us, and that world can be either forced on us by trickery or democratically constructed, descending from the basic tenets of our Constitutions and religions and moral codes. Unregulated capitalism leads to a despotism most often, and totally ignores the state of people born into the system that are dependent on the system to show them what life is about ... that cannot be solely and economic universe. Feudalism is Libertarianism is Capitalism is Facism with tweaked political, military and government factors that are unsustainable and do not serve any moral purpose. We are returning to feudalism, which the corporations as the fiefdoms and the plutocrats as the princes ... and without regulation they will surely have us all being peasants serving them. If you are interested take a look at Nancy MacLean's new book "Democracy In Chains". I would sum up the history of the world, like Marx, of class struggle, but maybe better as the search for a system of government that allows human behavior to work within the evolving constraints of morality and science. ?????

He launches into all these "exercises" in the first second, wear creepy pants so that you innoculate yourself against superficial public opinion ... but who says that is what happens? I really doubt there is or ever will be any civilization that would need to harness the power from a sun, and take the time, energy and matter and build the thing ... because in the time you build it you would want to change things about it, and it is so big as to be ungainly and impossible to manage or maintain.  It is a huge investment ... and for what ... lots and lots and lots ... almost infinite real estate.  Why would an advanced civilization need  so much real estate?

I liked it a lot too, but mostly for the concepts in it ... it was well thought out and done in a kind of Heinleinian homagistic way that really appealed to me, and old SciFi fan from the 60's. It was a relied that interesting SciFi with something to say could still be done in the 21st century. When you look at how clunky some of the old tech SciFi is today it's kind of sad.

The problem that I don't think Liberals get is that the military junta should be something we are all involved in ... not just a source of corruption and taking over power. How can we say that as long as we are fine in America that we do not care what happens in Germany or Japan, or Russia, China or North Korea ... in states all over the world. To have a real civilziation we must also have a reasonable approach to war on inhumanity in my opinion. America used to be the "arsenal of democracy", and then someone shifted that to - well we have to do that by supporting dictators and making everything about power, profit and domination. She too the Secretary of State job from Obama, and then was insubordinate according to the book "Listen Liberal" ... once in she just did whatever she wanted to do and did not do what the President asked her to if she did not want to. I am sorry Trump won the election, and I would rather have had Hillary as President, but really we will not see things stop getting worse and start getting better until someone like Bernie is President.

  32. The whole BS argument that props up the US system is because people at the top resent paying just a little more in taxes to sustain a whole better and fairer way of life. I just will never understand that. Not only do these kind of people feel better every penny they make, but they seem to be happier when other people do not have enough and are miserable. If this is the kind of mentality we promote I think we can already see in trends that it does not work in the medium and long term. It destroys both people and the environment.

  41. I don't really know if knowledge is growing exponentially ... if it is it has a denominator that is almost infinite. Even at our old knowledge growth rate humans have a wisdom deficit, so that wisdom deficit is just getting worse. Plus, the people on the top are finding all kinds of ways to limit information to the rest of us making our knowledge irrelevant. What is growing is the amount of data we have on human behavior and people ... and that is the scariest thing.

The Establishment is here and based on the fact that the people do not have time or money to be politically active ... so Universal Basic Income is not going to go over very well with the Establishment. The right wing wants to make sure government does not work - period.  To the extent government works the right wing believes it will create a demand for government, and that government will regulate them and take money from them - so don't look for any government or pubic solutions are long as we have significant Republicans in office and control of the government.  That is why we get "Nice job Brownie" ... Republicans want government to fail.

Sounds like a great idea ... but at some point by having everything in the cloud what do we turn into ... virtual "incorporation" - individual people and even their whole lives analogous to cells in an organism? What do our lives as human beings turn into when such decisions that went before are forced on everyone while the destruction of the planet also forces us to side with the meta-entity that is programmed death. Screw that, if human progress does not slow down we disappear.

Maybe another hundred years or more. If you like this theme in fiction you might read "A Plague Of Pythons" by Frederich Pohl. It's an old book, but a very good story.

There was as much of millions of years of evolution that we can never know anything about except to guess at, and where did the spark of perception of the environment, eating, survival, reproduction, etc get created? I always say, when a computer can have an orgasm, then we'll know it's conscious. ;-)

  53. If there was a simple solution Americans could get behind for these problems ... they would do it in a heartbeat. Americans wait for the crisis and like simple all-emcompassing solutions. So, all the oligarchs, or whatever you want to call them, have to do is keep things confusing, and make it look like there is argument on both sides. This started with alcohol, tobacco .... and now all the things going wrong are just too much, so we argue ... and argue ... and argue. Only, are we really arguing, or is what we see on the Internet that we ascribe to Russia, China or Macedonia are really coming or orchestrated by American oligarchs.

This is the one thing I really dislike and distrust from Kurweil ... he shrugs off political and moral concerns, based on his "accomplishments" ... which are exactly what puts him in the greatest position to exploit and take advantage of it - of course he doesn't care about privacy, no one is going to invade his privacy. Technology has promoted the view of a small number of people over everyone else.
