Outside of basic moderate Left, today, even for sincere Liberals, Progressives, the mainstream Left, people are sick of any connection to the rabble-rousing, extreme Pro-Palestinian Left, and they are withdrawing to the safety of moderate Liberalism.
They see the arc of where the Left is going - or they think they do because the Left has lost its own narrative because of the extremism tarred on it by Right-wing media, which is the only media remaining anymore in America - a sick state of affairs.
But even Democrats want immigration stopped and a real review of what we have in America - whether it sounds racist or not. When Democrats may lose some swing states because of rioting Muslims, they realize they've been infiltrated and taken for a ride.
Biden had his chance to fix immigration, and like both major parties has done the minimum. The sentiment of the Republicans to get rid of problem immigrants is very strong on both sides, and this is a place Democrats should be ripe to compromise and should. America cannot let itself in for the same kind of Pro-Palestinian jihadi-terrorist riots as we are seeing across much of Europe - they may have lost it already.

Matt Tiabbi, Tulsi Gabbard, Glenn Greenwald ... are not people I agree with much on.
I would not call them any kind of Left, but they do talk about and accept many of the
facts about the Ukraine-Russia situation that I agree with.
I am totally against this war, because I think it as provoked by Western/US/NATO
expansion. Cynically planned out and provoked and has cost hundreds of billions of
dollars, and probably much more than we know, brought the European economy to
its knees, kills hundreds of thousands of people, destroyed Ukraine ... and the reason
given is to weaken Russia.
I've heard the comment, if we can spend $100 billion dollars and destroy Russia's
military that is a win? That seems incredibly backwards twisted logic to me because
it's only a win if we were going to actually go into a hot war with Russia.
I assume you do not support that, but correct me if I am wrong.
Meanwhile all this destruction and reconstruction and burning stuff up is negatively
affecting climate change, and setting any efforts to reverse it back who knows how much.
I think this is probably mostly about an economic war to prevent Russia from integrating
itself into the Western/European economy. That is an argument - but it was not the one
that was made - and no one asked for votes for this war? The Ukrainians surely did not
want it, nor the Europeans or anyone but US oligarchs and corporations.
So ... how is it you seem to support this war? Or do I have that wrong?

I think you stepped in some politically correct muck David.
I hear your argument, but I submit that in view the world today,
we must distinguish between prayer from different religions,
because the of existence and behavior of Islam.
I am no so much saying this is true, but expressing and idea to
which I'd like to hear people's response, and of course what their
affiliations are if they respond.
The main thing I see is that Islam gives up its right to be see as
a religion or purely as a religion when it takes political power in
some 25% of the countries in existence today, about 50 countries
in the world and behaves politically in that regard inside other
countries. Islam is not really a religion.
The other aspect of this is when you look at the basis of most
religions and boil it down, for Christianity and Judaism, the root
of the philosophy is "do unto others as you would have others
do unto you" or some variation of that ideal. In Judaism a
Rabbi once told me "do not do unto another that which you would
not want done to you".
Islam is not anywhere in the neighborhood of that, and in fact was
invented by a military general basically, and is more of a low-tech
totalitarian recipe for expanding a way of like in all levels of struggle,
in peacetime, in conquest time and in wartime.
I think there is good reason to differentiate and exclude Islam from
being considered as a religion in the West as Islam, its core, in the
two base countries of the sects, Sunni ( Saudi Arabia) and Shia (Iran)
these countries are very active in warmaking and expansioinism and
very intentionally use the Liberalism of the West to infiltrate and
take power.
We had better inderstand this, and there is some evidence that we
do, and I think Bernie Sanders does as well. Anyone of Jewish
extraction sure ought to, and Christians should just because of what
they say they represent, and I think most do.
Islam is a military challenge to the West, so allow it space of hide
in the void of religious freedom we allow in the west is like providing
a place for the palque to hide in your body.

As one might expect from its history, Islam, for the Islamic elite is expert at the strategies for manipulation and propaganda. Reza Aslan came on the scene with this book about Christianity, raised a lot of interest and made lots of "fans" by appearing moderate and somewhere almost between dispassionate observer and downright atheist, like Cenk Uyger does as well, but the reality is they both seem to me to be more like deep cover propagandists. The way Reza and Cenk are always supportive of Islam, casting it in the victim status and they just cannot help themselves to fail to see a non-Islamic point of view.
Maybe this is where they both get the impression that the West is anti-Muslim as people, because that programming is so deep they understand in ways that Westerners just cannot how saturated they are in the mindset of Islam. Islam is religious, it is political, it is social, and there seems to be no way to really change it, it is what it is, and therefore seem inimical to any other way of life and it has not had to be tolerant anywhere in the world for hundreds of years. That plainly shows.
The whole FGM thing is also a dodge, as if by saying that FGM is not part of mainstream Islam, as if there was a mainstream Islam, that Islam is not problematic with women. The point is that Islam of course does not think it is problematic with women, because that is the way it is. Mainstream Islam my be hard to pin down but the tributaries all have to do with abuse and oppression, starting with Muslims.
Look at just back a century or a little more in the Middle East they were raiding Jewish and other non-Muslim towns all over the place. Jews had to pay a Dhimmi tax every year to the local islamic authority, and they got struck as in a beating when they paid the tax to remind them of their dog status in Islam.
This is a political system that thinks it has the ability to fool the world even though there is plenty about it that we all already know. It like a kid that pretends if they deny and lie enough that their parents will believe them, because they want to believe.
Reza's image was particularly manicured to appeal to white American Christians. No beard boyish look, and very pleasant and funny when interacting with Western media. Go back and look at I think it was 2007 on the Bill Maher show he was pretending to be gay, and like there was a huge gay underground movement in Islam that was OK.
Aslan is like a spy propagandist.

I think Wolff is wrong to emphasize any "central planning" aspect of socialistm, socialism is not intrinsically anti-market or based on central planning ... it is about regulation of the market for social, and today environmental purposes, it is the extention of law and justice to economic relationships.
This whole thing about central planning just sets the nutcases on the right off, which is odd because all corporations exist as, Noam Chomsky assests, mini dictatorships run by central top-down planning.
So what we have really is not a capitalist-socialist dichotomy, we have a oligarchical - democratic problem with no solution ... no negotiable social contract possible ... and as long as there is no debate and no solution, force and money prevails.
Really you simple cannot call the Soviet Union or China socialist ... there must be some kind of democracy, as Britain's socialist minister Tony Benn said, socialism is democracy. That excludes any country but the European social democracies. Wolff's inclusion of the USSR and PRC as socialist paints himself as a philosophic dinosaur in a way.

>> I'm amazed as to how ill-informed most people are on Socialism.
If you would step down for a moment off your high horse and think about it, there are reasons for that.
For one thing, and not the only aspect either, there are differing connotations or each term, as well as different interpretations and spins.
For instance, to me. social democrat means on domestic government issues one tends to be Liberal, as opposed to social conservative, for example.
democratic socialist means socialist in terms of differentiating socialism in democratic nations from fake socialism in countries like China or Russia, that in my opinion are not socialist at all. but more facist, micromanaged by a central committee.
Of course all countries are more or less governed by something that could be called a central committee, but in those terms it is how and how well those committees represent the people ... in other words, how republican, small r, are there.
I don't know if you can be amazing or blame the people for their confusion on socialism. Confusing people on the hows and whats of discussion governmental criticism and change of course benefits the government and the elites that runs a government.

I don't like the crowd that signed up for the New American Century neocon movement, but I think they got their mission statement exactly right ... and I am an extreme leftist.
What has happened in politics these days is that somehow if you are on the Left you have to be against America, the military, Western Civilization, basically everything that is large-scale.
Well, I am not. l I think the world needs a military cop, and the US is the best suited for it. I think the way Western civilization, rule of law, capitalism - AND real socialism gets a foothold in this world is by the West, led by the US, the arsenal of democracy.
Yes, these are sad and not lived up to ideals, but compared to the rest of history, we are doing better and constantly improving.
It is only in domestic policy and overaggressive military policy that the neocons were wrong.
I would also remove that world imperial, but if you like you keep it. It doesn't matter. World history moves in ways that are hard to understand and it looks ugly most of the time. People like to compare the US and Rome, but Rome never had elections. Rome never had laws against slavery, or really much rule of law at all. You have to compare what IS, not what you imagine in your head as perfection.

There are a bunch of rabid far-Left-wing nuts that do not even see what Bernie stands for they are so against Israel and the Jews ... it's crazy, but I think the Democrats are better without the nutcase, and can reach out to the moderate Republicans who are amazing at how the Republican party is getting way too far-Right-wing. It is time for a rebalancing of the parties, a fight for the center, a debate for rationality. I think Bernie can win this thing, he came out of nowhere, he is not crazy or threatening, he is not a political-connected sell out like Clinton, Bush's, Obama, of Kerry. He is the guy all Americans should be able to relate to, and if you can not agree with everything he says, at least you can reluctantly acknowledge he makes sense and will do what is necessary, or try to, and he will not just sit there doing nothing with Congress does not fall in line.

You people are clueless ... Robert Heinlein was a Democrat and even ran for office in California. He, like most thinking people, got disgusting with the corruption and stupidity of the Democratic establishment, even back then, way ahead of everyone who is just now starting to get it. He basically had nowhere to go politically in terms of parties and got disillusioned. The problem is not that the book was bad, just that it is outdated and overcome by history. It's hard to read and understand his viewpoint today. The movie is a good reinterpretation of the book. The idea is presented early on about how force is the absolute authority from with all political power is derived. If you think that Israel would exist if it did not have superior military force, or that the allies would not have won WWII if they did not have superior military force, you're crazy. The sad thing that is happening today is that the US, the arsenal of democracy - so called, is being owned and controlled by anti-democratic parts of the country that have gained power through economic corruption. It is a very dangerous time.
To blithely say that Robert Heinlein thought war was great is just s stupid comment. Heinlein's point is that force is the decider, so that war is necessary if you want to protect your society, so you have to institutionalize the value of self-preservation in society so that society does not get weak and fall to barbarians from outside or rot from inside.

This whole side issue about guns is just Hillary's way to try to get above Bernie on one issue. The problem is that the gun issue is wedged tight and only moves a little bit over time. The issue with guns is that it is a Constitutional right. It is not going away. So, the point is that the gun issue is not a major issue in America. Yes, when there is a shooting it is terrible, still, it is not as important as ...
Inequality
Health Care
Education
The shrinking Middle Class
Global Warming
Money in Politics
There are so many more important ideas that if we take care of will lead to there being less gun violence. When people live and grow up in a happy, fair, well-adjusted society they will not want to murder other people, or commit crimes.
It's really dishonest of Hillary to make this election about guns, because it implies that she only cares about tricks to make herself look good, not honesty, sincerity. In her life Hillary has been a team player, playing for the most right-wing Democrats, that is - her husband Bill Clinton. Then it was Henry Kissinger. She is all about corporate connections, Wal-Mart.
Will she do anything to get money out of politics? I don't think so. Will she do anything but push the more conservative agenda of the Democratic party, to try to use the Democratic Conservatives to do the Republican agenda ... I just don't think so.
When she talks about what she did ... she did not lead. She always talks about how she helped do something, which means she was not a major player or leader.
And by the way, when it comes to pandering ... what on Earth do you think Hillary Clinton is doing, she panders as well as anyone, it is her main mode.

It's a tough call on VP ... getting ahead of ourselves a bit.
First, Warren does not have the credentials that Bernie has, and after the Obama fizzle, I think we all have to worry about that. Let's try to get experienced people who stand for something in office, not the latest flash in the pan.
Also, VP is a nothing post. Warren could be much better used in another post other than VP. VP's never make it to the Presidential office. Sitting around for 4 to 8 years is not a good resume for a Presidential candidate in most cases.
Finally, what about the "balance" of the ticket, if that matters any longer?
I hate to say it, but I think Hillary or Bill would make a good VP candidate. It would really be Hillary's forte. She likes to get out there and make a scene, and if something happened to Bernie she is about the most respected other Democrat to take over. If she'd do it. For Hillary it would be let down after letdown, but I think the Clintons like and need the limelight so maybe!

@ceresmary206
Why did you delete your last comment? You are putting way to much weight on this issue in my opinion.
Yeah, seems like one has to make their own decision on what the Mediteranean diet is, or just decide what information source you want to believe. I think the guidelines say how to eat, more than what to eat.
Personally, I don't think there is one best way to eat, there are more lifestyle issues, and what not to eat - which is just about anything found in American supermarkets anymore - except just raw food.
They say avoid red meat, but I like red meat, and when I eat it always buy or try to buy organic and very lean meat ... like 7% fat hamburger is I eat ground beef, or tenderloin beef/fillet mignon if I want steak. I just eat small portions too.
I try to stay away from junk and processed foods, but sometimes I eat cookies or chips or ice cream which I always regret.

As a strong Leftist, the Left is full of bad ideas, faulty thinking, and unrealistic policies. They are hard to reach because so many of the Left of uneducated and deliberately ignorant. Not like those on the right, to be sure, but at least the right can hold together.
For instance, I do not support the Palestinians, and when I say that or try to discuss the history of the area I get jumped on from the Left. Another issue is gun control. I think there should be gun control, but I also support the 2nd Amendment and believe any gun control has to be consistent with the 2nd Amendment. Same with several of the pet issues that the Left is defined by in the media ... and I think they are defined this way to make them argue among each other and fragment.
The Left is difficult because we are a sub-culture inside the American military industrial complex, and so many are not cognizant of this and pay not respect to this fact. You cannot just wish and hope for some utopian chance, you have to do what they do in business ... a project plan.
The right is great at this ... but their project plans are plans of evil. How to lie and cut off the voices and money of their opponents. They figured out how to de-fund government by tinkering with the tax system to make it regressive and then blaming the government for both not getting the job done and for taxing us.
The Left is too busy bickering among themselves. Pundits on the Left do not do any real work, they hang out getting paid or becoming famous for being personalities with no particular expertise, visions or skills.
Bernie is different, but even so, you cannot build a country and a movement solely on an old man with no institution or movement build around him. Bernie has been fantastic, but the people who support him do not really get what he is saying. They like it but they do not get it and they are not willing to do the work or pay the money.
I never liked Jimmy Dore, or Sam Seder or even Pakman ... I am not here to find people I like, I am hear to listen to ideas and see where people are and what they say. Leftists demand that politics be fun, entertaining and immediately gratifying.
The other thing they do is they are all fine and good when the subject is their particular problem or beef, but once it gets solved, or it reached a logjam. The Left are human too, and they have to fight against their worst impulses where the Right seems to inflame them.
