There is no alternate path for anything ... when the President leaves for any other reason other than his term expiring and another President-elect preparing to take office, then the Vice-President takes over as President. In this case, and cases of corruption this is not an ideal system by far. Trump was the Trojan Horse that lied and sold this whole brain-dead non-Republican, outsider, America-first, bring back the factories story to people, and then he got in and installed the kind of people everyone from both sides has rejected consistently for many decades. Pence becoming President is a sickening though. And I bet if he does, he will get more than 2 terms as well, because the Republicans will cheat the elections to get him elected, and say that his first term where Trump leaves for whatever reason will not count towards him being President. Sickening. Pence is not better than Trump.
