I think Wolff is wrong to emphasize any "central planning" aspect of socialistm, socialism is not intrinsically anti-market or based on central planning ... it is about regulation of the market for social, and today environmental purposes, it is the extention of law and justice to economic relationships. This whole thing about central planning just sets the nutcases on the right off, which is odd because all corporations exist as, Noam Chomsky assests, mini dictatorships run by central top-down planning. So what we have really is not a capitalist-socialist dichotomy, we have a oligarchical - democratic problem with no solution ... no negotiable social contract possible ... and as long as there is no debate and no solution, force and money prevails. Really you simple cannot call the Soviet Union or China socialist ... there must be some kind of democracy, as Britain's socialist minister Tony Benn said, socialism is democracy. That excludes any country but the European social democracies. Wolff's inclusion of the USSR and PRC as socialist paints himself as a philosophic dinosaur in a way.

For one thing, and not the only aspect either, there are differing connotations or each term, as well as different interpretations and spins. For instance, to me. social democrat means on domestic government issues one tends to be Liberal, as opposed to social conservative, for example. democratic socialist means socialist in terms of differentiating socialism in democratic nations from fake socialism in countries like China or Russia, that in my opinion are not socialist at all. but more facist, micromanaged by a central committee. Of course all countries are more or less governed by something that could be called a central committee, but in those terms it is how and how well those committees represent the people ... in other words, how republican, small r, are there. I don't know if you can be amazing or blame the people for their confusion on socialism. Confusing people on the hows and whats of discussion governmental criticism and change of course benefits the government and the elites that runs a government.

The system only began to fail when the Republcians began to cripple it and take everything that was not tied down and steal it, while simlutaneously defunding and degrading the private sector. Your claim that you learned everything on your own sounds familar ... like familiar BS. There are certainly problems with education, but that is mostly because Republicans keep messing with that as well in order to beasically remove education for poor or non-white sectors to cut down on any competition and social instability. In what areas are you not free ... methinks you whine too much.
