  1. Hmmmm.... I don't know about that. All the early British Rock pioneers were influenced by Americans, either the Black guys who played the root of Rock The Blues or later performers like Buddy Holly & Elvis. We sprinkled our own special pixie dust over it after that but we weren't the first.

  5. 58 year old English Rock fan here who counts Jason Bonham as a personal friend & who has jammed with Brian May... Drop Queen. No one who really knows their musical onions rates them. Put EARLY Genesis in instead - For my money the greatest band we ever produced & who have the honour of producing the album I hold as #1 in my eclectic 2000 piece collection!

  6.  @extremestuff61  They wrote some good Pop/Rock songs but as I say if you have listened to a LOT of music like me you don't rate them! I say all that as someone who has actually met the band & jammed with Brian May back in the day - 1981/82? I also had ALL their albums when they were actually coming out! There were & are far worse bands out there but it just breaks my heart that you kids are like sheep & buy into the Queen phenomena whilst missing out on so much other amazing music!

  9.  @jimi5807  Well yeah but the UK has a population about 17% the size of the US & yet has probably produced something like 85% of the greatest bands known to the planet? I'm not a huge fan of American Rock in general, bands like Kiss, Bon Jovi & G's n R's are a bit overblown for me but my second favourite band of all time are American & I'd put a Canadian after that!

  13. I don't know why so many of you kids rate Queen so highly? Anyone British of that generation who knows their Rock music has them down as some over blown "kiddie's Pop/Rock" band! There is so much more credible & rewarding stuff out there!

  23. @ciccio tyson Yeah I'm with you there. I think Genesis intentionally lost the plot to gain a lot of money pandering to the mainstream American market but their early stuff was sublime! Funny enough Italy has always had an affinity for the band, I believe the biggest concert ever, with almost a million prople in attendance, was Genesis in Rome. A lot of people feel they were finished with "And then there were Three" but that is actually my favourite album of all time! Even an album that did actually herald the start of a more commercial direction for the band - "Duke" has stood the test of time & stands up pretty well. Just a shame none of these kids even want to listen to the band now....

  24. Never know why you guys never mention Genesis? In 58 years & 1700 albums worth of listening to music they are my #1 & have held the honour of being my #1 album choice of those 1700 for about 30 years now!

  27.  @gabe8581  I had a mate at school who ended up in a band with Jason Bonham (son of John Bonham of Zepp.) They came pretty close to cracking it in the 80's & supported some pretty big bands life Def Leppard & Queen. We used to get BACK back stage passes so met a lot of the greats! Had another mate who went on to play in a band with Paul Di'Anno the original Maiden frontman. Many other connections, some pretty remote, but I'll stop there!

  34.  @angelkrstevski3293  They were alright.... Funny enough I was just watching their LiveAid set & particularly compared to the shite that is about today, they stand up pretty well. I think what get's me is the amount of kids (& older) who pontificate on the greatest Rock bands ever having maybe ONE Queen &, if you're lucky, a Meatloaf album in their collection! Queen got cut a very lucky break in having their music used in a couple of films & mainly the Freddie Mercury bio doc. Add that exposure to some very catchy Pop/ Rock tunes and.... What I would say categorically though is that he WAS the greatest Rock frontman of all time, no question! Funny enough I met the band circa 81/82 - Freddie & actually jammed with Brian May for about 15 minutes!

I'm English 58, probably been listening to music 58 years & 9 months of that time, I play at a high level & have knocked about with Jason Bonham as well as jamming with Brian May, I grew up yards from where Maiden started off & often drunk at The Ruskin Arms, featured on a lot of their covers - (although I don't really rate them as a band!) - Without a question of a doubt - Genesis are our #1! Forget the patent shit they produced in the 80's on when Collins got them to bend over & present their backsides & integrity to mainstream America for a LOT of Yankee $'s - their music was just sublime perfection in sophistication, harmony, originality & magnificence for awhile! I say that as someone with over 2000 albums in a very eclectic collection! Such a shame you keeps don't get that or even seem to want to check them out.... Checkout - "Afterglow," "Firth of Forth," "Down & Out," "Blood on the Rooftops," "Many too many," "Ripples".... Oh there was just so much great music!

  44.  @med109  I don't know about that! In the bank maybe but her Maj & the family own half the UK & probably 20% of the most valuable jewels & treasures in the world! You only have to see who else was on that line up & the mediocrity & short lived nature of some of their careers to gauge the actual credibility of appearing at the event. If we were talking about an English "head's" that would have been pared down to about 8 credible acts & some that weren't invited would have been there too! All that said their set was amazing & I would probably put Mercury as THE greatest frontman Rock has known! I get it that you are confused. Queen are an internationally mega success phenomena but very often the devil or lack of credibility can be in that statement! I genuinely don't dislike them, I have met them (not Mercury) & played with Brian May but even back in the day they were considered a bit lightweight. They had some good songs & few reasonable early albums & all in all added to the gaiety of nations but..... They're not for me or many TRUE British Rock fans I know!

  49. There are some great Rock bands from the States in fact one of my favs of all time is the mighty - Steely Dan but I think with Rock in particular & the Motley Crue/Kiss/Bon Jovi sort of vibe - It was all style over substance & over blown. British Rock tended to be understated & genuine.

  53. I listen to a LOT of music with well over 2000 albums in a very eclectic collection. None of you have mention what anyone who knows about music will call as THE greatest American band ever if not the best in the world ever - Steely Dan. Named after the sex toy in the 60's cult classic "Barbarella," they were immensely accomplished musicians who wrote some amazing tracks. Try "Kid Charlegmange." by them. The true story of a West Coast drug dealer who invented Base cocaine. " "Just for fun you mixed a diamond (heroin) with the pearl (cocaine) & turned it on the world that's when you turn the world around...Did you feel like Jesus?" Fucking immense!

Prog Rock, Heavy Rock, Indie, Punk, New Romantic, Mod ALL originated in the UK! What youth movement did Spain or Poland come up with? We are much more than a bunch of dopes who know how to knock up a catchy Pop song, some of the most beautiful, visceral sublime music on this planet came off these shores & you would be both dishonest & disrespectful to deny that!
