Thinking about this & looking at the slick streamline thumbnail, as most aircraft expend the most fuel taking off & climbing why not just use the lift element to get you super high super quick & maybe then engage environmentally friendly, possibly electric, engines to push you along at high speeds in the thin air of the upper atmosphere? End of the day, to be viable as long range transport, they are going to have to travel at faster than 140 mph!
