  1. That's insane. I am a boomer. When I was only 6 or 7 my parents would give me a dollar and some subway tokens and I would get on the subway (D train 183rd St. or 4 train at the other end) by myself and go to mid town or lower Manhattan and see places (museums, Staten Island Ferry, Empire State Bldg., etc) by myself 2 or more times a week. It was how I spent my weekends. No one cared, no laws were broken and I had great times and learned a lot of things. I had my own door key to our house too. I knew a half dozen museum curators and librarians and they knew me. I knew several of the subway conductors and more than one traffic policeman. I got to go backstage at Radio City Music Hall and had lunch with some Rockettes when I was about 11 while my parents were over a dozen miles away. A few times I went to Kew Gardens then caught a bus by myself to visit my grandparents in South Ozone Park, Queens. I had grown up friends all over the city. I wasn't the only kid who wandered the streets either. It wasn't a crime for a kid to ride the subway by themselves or walk around. Yes, FAO Schwartz wanted an adult to be with us, but that's about the only place anyone ever said anything. Heck when I was about 12 I got on a train at Grand Central and went to upstate for the day and the week after that I visited Philadelphia (but did get chewed out for coming home late that night).
