  1. Good assessment. I note that in the released images of the ship going down none of the elevators with the air defense missiles were in the up position. This certainly supports no one important enough to engage them on the ship having noticed or being aware of the incoming missiles. Another factor is the Slava class cruisers lack automatic water tight doors and thus do not compartmentalize the internal compartments. .Their internal firefighting ability was minimal. A cumulative result was the lack of an ability to handle internal fires, explosions and incoming water. The other 2 cruisers also have these weaknesses. This isn't the first time we have been shocked by an anti ship missile. I remember also HMS Sheffield and the Exocet.

  2. This SMO of Ukraine is best gauged by looking at the logistical and economic map of Russia's Kursk region. Ukraine now controls both the gas pipeline control center (through which gas still flows to Europe and earns Russia money and influence) and the railroad yard in Sudzha. At the same time the Kursk Nuclear power plant may soon belong to Ukraine (and be turned off with all that will mean to Russians who had been laughing at Ukraine's power outages). Likewise Russia has (had?) multiple military supply and munitions warehouses inside the Kursk region. Much of those supplies are now going back to Ukraine. There are nuclear warhead storage faculties inside Kursk. One or two of those nuclear weapons depots may now belong to Ukraine too. Literally hundreds of Russian soldiers have surrendered to Ukraine and have been brought back to Ukraine. Even if Ukraine is driven out of Kursk in the next few days the economic and logistics impact on Russia is devastating, especially if they leave scorched Earth where they had been. It also doesn't politically help Putin.
