Most European cities had unsafe waterways due to fecal contamination and over population with poor sanitary practices for over 1,000 years. The only safe beverages for a long time were beers and spirits and wine. Similar illnesses fell upon people who bathed in polluted waters. In much of Europe it was believed bathing either, a) invited demonic spirits, or b) water had strange magnetic fluxes that caused illness. For 1,000 years hardly anyone in Europe drank water or bathed and the use of perfumes to hide body odor was very common. It was only when tea which used boiled water arrived in England from India and the Far East that people were able to safely drink water. Until then everyone older than 2 or 3 was drunk most of the time, or they got sick. Children went straight from mother's milk to beer or wine. The major cities of the US from about 1700 on to about 1880 had similar problems and there too many drank alcoholic beverages instead of water until the true causes of cholera and typhoid was recognized and better sanitation followed. Much of Europes turbulence from about 700ad through 1880 may have been alcohol inspired.
