@lht7145 Of course there are people who judge the striving to more self-determined independence as provoking war ... But why not letting the people of this region decide who they want to trade with and on what scale. Why should China or India be allowed to decide on third parties?!? Dominance won't settle any dispute!

@edhiepitz So what would be a reasonable standardized procedure for (partial) separation?!? - That's right, as far as I know, mankind hasn't developed one yet...

@edhiepitz I do apply reasonable abstract criteria to everyone and everything ... If there is an "ancient region" where people want to separate themselves from the "motherland" (or the occupier), then free elections should make that possible and (at least partially) enable separation and independence. The "governing country" will on the long term not be able to lead this group of people without violence under the neglected and long outdated regulations anyway... Many regions have published a demand for more independence [ Western Sahara, Tibet, Pyrenees, (Bavaria, Saxony ;) ... ] But a possible (at least partial) separation should be driven by the desire of an (ethnic/historical regional-language) majority to be polled in an independent standardised electoral process, and not driven by extremists... (e.g. ballots in a local language like Basque, Cherokee, Tibetan, Swabian, Saxon...etc. ;)

@edhiepitz Not "we" cut them off! - The very first question regarding a desire for separation must always be: Is it possible in a given region to find a (large) majority of an “ethnic” group that is willing to voluntarily identify itself on the basis of “their common values”?!? If such a "homogeneous" ethnic group cannot be found in the region, then every second step is obsolete ... Either the "melting pot" comes together through moderation and negotiation (which should always be the first choice), or smaller "suburb groups" must first be defined before further serious "separation talks" make sense.

@edhiepitz yup, and even transnational regions with the Basques (Spain/France) or Kurds (Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran) are known. In California, however, I can't see such a "homogeneous ethnic group"; Chinatown, Little Italy, Sierra Espagna & Co. are more likely to be found there.

@edhiepitz I am advocating a sane standardized procedure for those groups and regions that want to separate. I do not prefer any particular decision or outcome... Desired external relations should be decided by the respective group itself.

@joshzhang7041 It is always about the moderation and negotiation of different wishes within a group. And if opposition parties are not able to settle their dispute by fair compromise, it is better if they separate altogether to avoid continual strife. - Otherwise, the suppression of the weaker will create a breeding ground for terrorism. China can supposedly sing a song about it... National unity comes from voluntarily supported common values - and not from a few lines almost arbitrarily drawn on the drawing board.
