I am interestrd to know if a pilot from the harbor was on board and running the vessel. Normally the boats captain isn't allowed to pilot the boat into port on their own.

@mycosys Yeah, you can't just stop a ship that size, even under full power. I imagine there was no stopping it once the engines died.

No bridge on earth is gonna take a hit from a fully loaded cargo ship. A small unteathered barge in a storm is enough to wreck most bridges.

@SwampCityRadio1974 Yeah, Its usually just run by a Harbor Pilot, dropped off by the pilot boat before the ship enters the harbor. I am waiting to hear if he/she was on board and doing their job. Edit- Another poster is saying there were two Harbor Pilots on board and at helm.

Apparently two Harbor Pilots where on board and piloting the vessel into port. Once it lost power there was no stopping. All they could do was drop the anchors, which didn't stop the ship.
