I'm surprised that it made it that far since it moved over much cooler waters which will weaken the storm as it does when the eye moves over land.

It becomes extratropical once it moves over much cooler waters and further north. Water needs to be at least 80 F (27 C) to remain a hurricane.

They only form over warm tropical ocean water which is the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic off the southeastern U.S. where the warm gulf stream is. This one was quite unusual since it moved over the much cooler waters that surround the British Isles which weaken tropical storms however was moving very fast which didn't let it weaken enough. Hurricanes need to move over warm water which is the fuel for it, the warmer the water, the stronger they get. Once they move over land or much cooler water, they weaken fast.

They do only form over water ocean water when it's 80 F or higher and need to move over that warm water which is the fuel for hurricanes. Once they get over land or chillier waters, they weaken. I'm really surprised to see it go that far over much cooler water and still have hurricane force winds, however it was moving very fast which didn't allow it to weaken much once it got to Ireland.
