  3. No, this first started happening 50 years ago when foreign competition came along with political corruption in the late '60s and '70s. This was the start of the downfall of Detroit. It was still struggling in the '80s, then made a little recovery in the '90s and early '00s. Then came the epic economic crash with bankruptcies, outsourcings and bailouts later in the '00s. That appeared to have been the nail in the coffin for Detroit, the once mighty auto industrial might that went bust.
