Patton was in charge of the Lorraine campaign. His 3rd Army suffered 55,000 casualties and still didn't get out of it in 4 months of trying.

Patton wasn't the most feared general and the Germans didn't even know who was commanding the ghost army for ages.

Marry Christmas Except his own boss Bradley said Patton was a shallow commander with only one tactic... bulling ahead. When that wasn't possible he failed to get anywhere, as his Lorraine failure shows. Most of the time in WW2 you COULD NOT carry on with momentum and it took more complex strategy to overcome that problem, which Patton didn't have according to Bradley.

@sparkyfromel Actually Montgomery correctly predicting El Alamein to last around 2 weeks and Normandy to last around 3 months was genius. No other allied general could have correctly predicted that. I doubt Slim would have done better than Montgomery against the Germans in Africa and Europe. In all truthfulness, Slim didnt come up against the best of the Japanese. Montgomery in contrast defeated some of the premier German formations of the war.

"... Bastogne and he thought no other general would have done what Patton did there." All Patton faced in front of Bastogne were four mediocre infantry divisions of Branderbergers Seventh Army. No SS panzer divisions, no Tiger battalions....and even then he struggled for 5 days to advance less than 20 km including 3 days just to get through the village of Chaumont. The US 1st Army, under Montgomery, meanwhile, were by then fighting off 1st SS, 2nd SS, 9th SS, 10th SS, 12th SS, Panzer Lehr, 2nd Panzer, 9th Panzer, 116th Panzer, the Tigers of SS 501 etc.
