It all started when the Yugoslavian dictator died. A vacuum of power happened and as you mentions there was many different interests depending on ethnicity and old conflicts that started to boil after decades of suppression. I know people that was there as soldiers working for UN and USA and it turned into a shitstorm really rapidly. "The paradise for maniacs" as one veteran calls it.
