The French had more tanks than the Germans and better tanks too. the Germans had mainly Panzer II's which were armed with two machine guns and Panzer 3's which were medium tanks with a small gun, they only had a few Panzer IV's and the Tiger was still being designed. It was how they were used that made the difference and the combined arms with the Stukas and artillery. The problem really was the French command who were stuck in another era and thought it was going to be a repeat of WWI, with well established lines and attrition, speedy armoured attack was just not something they imagined possible. So they didn't even consider it.
