  1. My Mom was an RN. In the 1970's she helped to break down racial and gender barriers in the nursing program at San Diego State University. Mom also was a pioneer of public health in Southeast San Diego, which is still a predominantly minority part of San Diego, California. Like Ms. Nightingale Mom was a very humble woman. As far as I know, SDSU has never acknowledged my Mom's struggle to get into its nursing program.
