  1. My Mom faced racism when she decided to enroll in the nursing program at San Diego State College (now University) in the early 1970's. Once she was admitted, she faced racism from professors who failed her because of her race. Fast forward six years later, and Mom helped bring public health to our side of town, Southeast San Diego. She worked along side of the leading Black phyiscians in San Diego. More years later Mom taught nusrsing classes in various facilities in San Diego county. She also was a nurse for Head Start Childcare. Mom did all of this while raising four children on her own, with very little financial help from our fathers ( there were two of them). My Mom is my hero!
