If one has the age skills and motivation, the obvious easy choice is to emigrate, (since there is only a dreadful future there, unless you are one of the feudal lords who actually owns swathes of the place) then return from time to time to see remaining friends and perhaps family, and on leaving after that, saying thank God I went!
