  1. Why do they drop the rocket? Why not put it on top of the middle-wing, ignite the attached rocket and when it is pushing, detach it and let it go its way? That way no altitude would be lost...

  2. That could be reduced by angling it diagonally up towards space, as the plane flies horizontally....
