  1. ​ @debbiegilmour6171 actually the UK has largely destroyed its valuable economic sectors. During the Empire the cloth industry was shipped abroad & when the Empire collapsed our connection to that industry also collapsed, before that was spice trading & more recently Thatcher's pogroms against the Unions collapsed much of our industry leaving us reliant on service industries in turn leaving vast numbers of people on the dole. Shipbuilding, railway equipment, coal, steel, pottery, whole major industries are gone or nearly gone.

Income Tax was a short-term measure specifically to pay for fighting Napoleon & it was stopped immediately the war was over. It was re-introduced in 1860 & is re-introduced every year since because it's a temporary tax -- the basis of British tax is wealth taxes.
