Because these statistics are designed for Government use they're politically expedient figures so you really have to know what you're doing to get useful information from them. For instance "Relative Poverty" is 60% of the median income (£32,300 in 2021/22, the most recent ONS figure, so £19,380) & "Absolute Poverty" is the same figure but based on the 2010/11 median (£29,400 so £17,640) adjusted for inflation (near-zero for most of that time), neither figure closely resemble poverty experienced by an individual trying to survive. "Median" is either the central figure between the highest & lowest or the central of a collection of figures (they seem to be using the latter definition) but the highest figures have been going up consistently since 2010 & we have set a new record for number of both millionaires & billionaires in most of those years while the numbers at the bottom are also increasing at an alarming pace & this is why the median is going up, not because Average Joe is getting more. To find Average Joe in the statistics we need "mode" (most common number) not "median" (central number) & this figure doesn't seem to be published. Government statistics are extremely devious & need to be interpreted by experts 😢

@fburton8 I'm not an expert, I refer you to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Oxfam, Save The Children & similar expert groups & possibly superceding these the 2017 report of the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty, Prof Philip Alston, in which he found 20% of the population in poverty & predicted 40% child poverty by 2021. I understand the figures are now even worse.

@fburton8 "abject poverty", "destitution" & "Charles Dickens" were mentioned in Alston's report along with references to the 1945 Social Consensus.

That's hardly surprising, we've had Neoliberalism for 45 years now so it's only people over 65 who have seen anything different from an adult perspective. 😢

Starmer's Labour have done the other thing – they have joined The Establishment! 😢

"Social Media" doesn't come up with ideas by itself, somebody put those ideas there & somebody spread them.

I refer you to the Oxford English Dictionary.
