 @CarlTebbutt the "nouveau riche" have been attracting condemnation for centuries, both from those above & those below them.

@532bluepeter1 that's "new money", "old money" are usually very much the opposite, they're working towards the stability of the estate which very much includes the welfare of everyone living on the estate & the land itself. "Old money" was decimated in the 1970s though – Labour taxed many of them out of existence putting thousands out of housing & of employment, English Heritage had to be created to catch some of the abandoned manor houses.

@GG-hu9dn "build them for everybody" suggests to me things like Buckingham Palace & the Victorian museums, libraries, bath houses, sewers & other public utilities. The Victorians certainly built a lot of public works.

 @inguzwulf Reet-Smug is an excellent example of 2nd generation nouveau riche, his father made the money though JRM has expanded it through his hedgefund & other shady dealings.

@stephenjenkins1323 there used to be hundreds of philanthropic businesses that respected their staff & communities (Cadbury's, Rowntrees, Lever Bros, Bata etc) but a combination of regulations & buyouts has made them all go away 😢
