  5. Yep. The threshold for paying should match house prices or exclude primary residences though. The law, in theory, codifies "normal behaviour" & almost everyone feels that it's normal for parents to pass their houses to their children in their wills.

Previously the Police took a lawful approach acknowledging that protest is a protected Human Right which has been protected under international law since at least 1957, the Press mostly ignored it even when there were hundreds of thousands marching into Parliament Square. Recent Home Secretaries, notably Mrs May, Mrs Patel & Mrs Braverman have been directing the Police to contravene the Law. Home Secretaries & Prime Ministers getting above themselves isn't new but it never ends well, there are often deaths & society is often changed in unpleasant ways.

  28. Thoughtful, indeed often incisive, & honest yes, but he's still a Small State Thatcherite. The general principle of government non-interference is something I like but the Thatcherist way of doing that is to shut down all State institutions in the assumption that "The Market" will ride to the rescue. The non-interference model I see working is to set up & resource properly a full set of State institutions & then stop interfering.

  46. 15:52 the history of snobbery around servants is very specific to a small range of classes & it's middle classes not upper or lower. It was fundamental to upper classes to spend part of their formative years "in service" & if they showed "attitude" they were informed quickly & thoroughly exactly how they could improve, with lower classes there were limited jobs available & if you got one you did your level best to keep it. The basis for doing the work was different but the lessons learned were the same – we are all very strongly dependent on each other & the way we treat each other is important. The Middle classes however had fundamentally different attitudes based on the idea that "there's always another one" & it was absolutely fine to turf a servant out on the street without a second thought, a servant was someone who had "fallen", had made themselves worthless through faulty character.

Starmer has said it many times & seems to believe it. He said on LBC that Israel should shut off water & food to Gaza, does that sound to you like "supporting a 2 State solution"?
