  101.  @kloffus3  yes, after considerable coaxing & a Court case or 2 the Leave campaigns were investigated, found to have accepted something like £14million of difficult-to-trace Russian money filtered through Arron Banks' Isle of Man bank & passed on to Cambridge Analytica taking them around £10million over budget, fined to the fullest extent available to the Electoral Commission & passed on to the Police. After which we have heard nothing. Darren Grimes, favourite of TV talk shows, fashion student at the time, was one of those fined. It wasn't obvious he had funds to pay the fines but seems to have survived unscathed. The EU also investigated but it seems to have been outside their jurisdiction so did nothing. No doubt it was discussed during closed-door parts of the Brexit negotiations.

  108. @john atco, civil unrest is not something to worry on a personal basis, unless you live in the City of Westminster, because the large uprisings tend to come from fairly small areas & are generally pretty civilized till they get to their destination. The most geographically spread uprising was 1381 & it mostly came from the Thames & Medway valleys east of London. What you do have to worry about is the causes of unrest which are generally very widespread.

  116. 3:27 out-of-date PPE. Most of this was already in the country in warehouses handed over by the Blair/Brown Government & just locked by the Cameron/Clegg "government". Not cleared out & sold, just locked with the staff sacked. I don't know who set the warehouses up but I would expect it was some time in the late Victorian era or very soon after & handed to the NHS in 1948. They were properly manned, maintained & continuously updated till 2010 or possibly the 2012 Health & Social Care Act (the #LansleyReforms).

The British Constitution is built on the 1688 Bill of Rights just like the American, Canadian, Australian & quite a few other Constitutions, it's not the Constitution itself that's at fault, it's the way the thing has been walked all over by government after government for decades, possibly centuries with the Courts unable to do anything about it unless someone brings up a Court Case challenging some dodgy behaviour or other. Like the infamous Prorogation, the Courts should have been all over it from day one but they weren't even allowed to look, it took Gina Miller bringing a Case before they could act.

The consensus is that it was caused by imports of (then-illegally) unchecked meat for the catering industry, waste from which was fed to pigs & it spread from there to sheep & cattle. Roads & Public Paths were closed across the country, there was a total ban on moving livestock, there were foot washes at field gates & wheel disinfectant pads across roads. Millions of animals were burned on huge pyres. I don't remember what else but it was a mess for 11 months & Blair's Government was more competent than the current shower.

Indeed, he seems to have found the scheme likely enough to continue that he built one of the longest bridges in Europe across the straits (Azov Strait?). What he has done is wind up all the #RightWingNutjobs to create a civil war in the Donbas & backed them up with weapons but that scheme seems to have stalled in that one region which, presumably, is why he's sent the tanks in now (though he forgot to also send in fuel for them).

Yes, there were bloated payrolls at times but that was because that's what the Government of the day wanted, it wanted to keep the Dole queues short. It worked too & didn't harm the economy & improved public finances because all of it works on the circulation of money, the Taxman chips off a few percent as it flows by. Having huge amounts of money in very few hands means most of it isn't circulating past the Taxman to be syphoned into the Public Purse, indeed much of it is squirreled away in the Cayman Islands. Nowadays we're seeing huge distortions in corporate structure, the NHS is a good example, it's mostly private enterprise now but the funding structure means that there's well over 100,000 front-line medical staff absent but the layers of management are absolutely ridiculous. When it was set up the Ministry of Health ran a small Inspectorate to check nothing was getting out of line & the Ministry's main jobs were rubber-stamping invoices & commissioning infrastructure. The next layer was Regional Health Boards doing mostly policy work ensuring even coverage & administering GPs. Then there were hospitals, the management of which was a Matron (or Senior Male Nurse) & a small accounts office. Doctors & practitioners were hired in by Matron. Matrons were nurses who had worked their way up through the ranks. Political meddling, particularly since 1979, has totally corrupted this simplicity & the expense is phenomenal. Pickfords was an excellent example of nationalization, Government barely meddled at all, they were nationalized for the duration of WWII because they controlled most of the traffic on the canals & traffic priorities needed at least oversight. Nationalization also meant that sunken boats & bombed canals were dealt with more quickly because the Army could assist without consulting banks. The obvious solution is to establish nationalized companies as Crown Commissions & the legislation around them made to prevent political meddling. Probably the best example is the Crown Estate (the source of funding for the Monarchy), it's been running just fine for centuries & to this day still provides day-to-day funding for the Monarchy (despite 86% of it going to Government)

Beyond that FPTP narrows the choice to 2 even though the field is much wider, people vote for perceived authority or comradeship. On the Tory side the only competition in England (where most voters are) is Farage's party (whatever it's called this week, Reform I think) which is why the Torys have shifted to poach Farage's votes. On Labour's side there's the LibDems, Greens, Communists Women's Party & dozens of others all taking votes from each other so Torys win most elections even though they're the least representative of all the parties.

Labour are a new party, just over 100 years old, actually a coalition of several parties, mostly Labour & Cooperative, & from their ranks another party formed 30 years ago, New Labour, who are currently in Opposition. At the next election another completely separate party stands a chance, they already have 3 people in Parliament & lots in Local Government, the Green Party of England & Wales (Scotland already has lots of Greens) So you can see new parties do come through sometimes & perhaps now is the time for the next one?

Apple is the only large holdout & they're doing it because their hardware is actually superior. Apple did it before with the Apple Desktop Bus on laptops & desktop computers which was adopted industry-wide as the original USB. Everybody physically on the territory of the United Kingdom (& Office holders abroad) has to comply with the Law. To deal with Johnson one law rises above the rest - Misconduct in Public Office, it's Commonlaw so it's vague & relies on the integrity of the Supreme Court but it should hold, if it does it will ban him from Public Office forever (plus some other penalties like 35 years in jail). He has been put up for it before but a corrupt Judge threw it out (case unheard) at the High Court stage. A corrupt judge wouldn't uphold a constitution any more than he would uphold law.

Obviously there's mixing & personalities but fundamentally upper middle class are "tradesmen made good" (built their business to a point which gives them status) whereas upper class are the remnants of the feudal system wherein pretty much everyone who wasn't some sort of lord was property. The difference in outlook, in part, comes from the supply of 'lesser' people - businesses see an unbounded (if sometimes slow) supply of staff whereas feudal serfs were mostly bred on the estate. This leads to notions about the 'common good': if something bad happens to employees you can just get more but if something bad happens to serfs you're likely to run out of them & your estate, your family's heritage, your status, will collapse so you watch their progress closely &, at least to an extent, look after them. Fundamentally different. Charles Dickens & many others in the Victorian era & through to the late 20th Century worked hard to overthrow this system but the population voted to go back to it in the 1979 General Election. (I don't agree with either system & they're both archaic but this is the 'upper' echelons of the society we have & we have to accept it whether we are in the process of changing it or not).

He's not good at much but he has a moral compass (even if it's off it's bearings) & he has the humility to bring in genuine expertise to fill in for his lack. He would select a Cabinet that's designed to function & he would be ruthless in re-selecting for any post in case of failures. He's a military man & saw active service in several hostile theatres so he thoroughly understands the strength rules give you & he would be respected on the World Stage. For the country though, that's probably a really bad thing because he would ground his premiership on the 2019 Manifesto & that's a document that deserves to be in the Courts as Evidence for the Prosecution.

  950. ​ @seanfitzpatrick7441 political decisions are what's really putting the prices up, 1) energy is sold by producers & bought by retailers on "the open market" (stock exchanges etc) 2) all energy is sold as if it's gas. If 1KWh costs 25p to produce from gas & 5p to produce from solar you pay 25p for solar. I don't know where all the excess money goes, some goes to nuclear which costs 95p to produce but the rest? No idea.

  951.  @huginnmuninn2155  the Grid stated in the last year or 2 they don't need baseload, they could do it all with immediate calls for power, mostly pre-booked (which is why there was so much fuss initially over integrating renewables, they can't guarantee the weather 3 weeks in advance). This pre-booking is essential but adds lots of complication & it's because of how long it takes to start up & shut down, plus maintenance schedules. Solar can just flip a switch & it's on or off but only in daylight & only when the weather is right, wind turbines are usually spinning at the right speed & can switch on & off within a minute or so, similarly coal & gas can do "rolling standby" where the generators are up to speed but not generating, they can produce part load very quickly but full load takes a while to get the boilers up to temperature & if they've actually shut down & gone cold can take hours to start up, nuclear is even slower (some foreign reactors are faster but not British ones). Gas power stations are technically interesting, there's one Cornish one that works as you would expect – a gas turbine connected to a generator that can start up in 2 or 3 minutes – but all the others have this but then the exhaust is used to boil water to run 3 or 4 really big steam turbines.

Some groups (like the Membership of the Labour Party) never deviated from that 2:1 view. The EC/EU from its planning stages before it formed the ECSC was always about peace & most people know that. It exists to prevent a third World War starting in Europe, that's why they're being so cagey about Russia & it's invasions & why they were buying Russian oil.

  968. The latter half of that I agree with but you've missed what's happened for the first part. It's all because the Government has ruled that our oil & gas be sold on the "Open Market" so prices are set by the "market" not by the oil companies, the price of a barrel of oil at the wellhead hasn't changed much since last year but the "market" has changed drastically which gives the oil companies the profits that are being reported. Prices were actually negative for a short while last year & if Cameron hadn't sold off most of our storage that would have tided us over much of the price spike we're in right now. What little storage we still have is now approaching full but the prices paid to achieve that were far from negative. If Cameron hadn't canceled the nuclear power stations & renewables Blair had given the go-ahead for in 2008 that would have set us in better stead too, as would leaving alone the Feed In Tariffs that were encouraging people to buy their own solar & wind generation. There were even grants for domestic solar.

It didn't vary despite the attitudes of the Media changing from one extreme to the other throughout that period. Cambridge Analytica, boosted by Russian trolls, swung the vote to 1:1 not poor education.
