@markm0000 fun idea but an EMP would also fry the starter motor & ignition system.

M.A.N. & many others experimenting with rotary valves found that rotating them the other way improved sealing & thus wear compared with the valve you show, I believe they settled on a pair of contra-rotating discs with ceramic faces though this led to a portion of the cylinder head being excessively thin unless they used the valves as the cylinder head thus magnifying sealing issues again & requiring a gap in the side of the piston crown for the injector which led to wear & sealing issues in the bore.

@pastaalalamborghini no, the valves don't spin against the seat, they rotate very slightly as they open presenting a different face to the gas flow thus evening out any deposits. Notionally, they've stopped rotating before they close.

@Crayma800 about double the cost of sleeving which is about double the cost of rebore & over-sized pistons, more if it also needs repair.

2:51 valve seat wear was solved before Thomas Midgely Jr killed himself inventing tetraethyl lead, what the invention allowed was softer & cheaper valve seats.

How well did your mounts hold up compared with OEM rubber?
2
@not_alec it's not capitalism per-se, it's the particular variations on capitalism used in parts of the "First World".
2
@AbeDillon yes, I've seen engines rebuilt 3 times (in England). I've also seen engines taken out of a scrap vehicle & put in a better one (I've also done it myself).
2
@d4a how are these mounts holding up?
1
@gabrielv.4358 it really doesn't matter whether or not it's "better", it's not the unit everyone else is using. You may as well write your text in Pashto, you will be understood just as well.
1
@gabrielv.4358 precisely!

@mrb692 Nikasil is more hard-wearing than chrome.

5:30 this is largely resolved by angling the ducting relative to the valve head though that can lead to excessive swirl.

@bloqk16 25 US MPG = 30 UK MPG = 9.4 l/100Km 14(US) = 17(UK) (roughly). These are appalling figures by European standards!

Ok, this is good, but what about the next step -- ceramic coatings, inserts & components?

I believe the Knight Sleeve Valve, as used by Rolls Royce for many years, was the most successful alternative to the poppet valve but again it doesn't handle high engine speeds & has valve-train losses. I think it's the only alternative used for a sustained period.

@piccalillipit9211 it's lovely to see you here, away from the subject areas I usually see you. It restores my faith that humans can think broadly. 😊
1
@piccalillipit9211 I too love valve-ported scavenge-blown 2-strokes

@piccalillipit9211 you spreading awareness of just how grotesque politics has become, & how dangerous, has huge societal value & I thank you for it but as you say, everyone has to find their own balances.
1
@piccalillipit9211 I like your idea of F1 as the test-bed for expanding technologies. I understand F1 are going into battery-electric propulsion next which might mean them finishing with internal combustion though one of the Japanese makers (Toyota I think) have just announced a new ICE which they claim to be cleaner than battery-electric so who knows?
1
@piccalillipit9211 I don't know what's healthy, what I do know is that most of us have a very minimal & severely distorted understanding of world politics as compared with the Victorian & previous populace & this seems to be the work of the Daily Mail & other tabloids. (The Mail was the first, in 1896, probably encouraged initially out of snobbery). Most of us don't even know where our food comes from let alone what unpleasant surprises the future holds.
1
@davemccage7918 that's a completely different set of trade-offs -- you're not getting 40 miles per gallon out of an engine delivering over 100 horsepower per litre.

@tirushone6446 1949 – Rover jet1. Ok, it was just a prototype but it was a gas turbine. GM also had a couple of prototypes in the '50s, the Firebird was aptly named. Rover raced some cars at Le Mans in the '50s. The Rover 2000 series-production saloon was originally designed with a gas turbine but the marketing department bottled out & a new piston engine had to be designed in a rush.

It is taken seriously, so far they haven't beaten poppet valves for production engines. Pre-war engines ran slow enough that sleeve valves were feasible & competed strongly but as soon as engine speeds went up the poppet valve beat the sleeve valve. Rotary valves have never made it to production in 4-strokes.

Just an FYI, an acronym is an abbreviation which spells out a word or pronouncable word-like sound, like NATO or Nikasil.

Just an FYI, a portmanteau is a specific form of abbreviation.

@hksininen but few with the precision, repeatability & scale of Yamaha.
1
@seanmalloy7249 they're "pulling the wool over your eyes", EVs & renewables are fine in existing power grids with possible exceptions like USA's incredibly unstable multiple power grids.
1
@that.schamp there are already specialist machine shops that take outsourcing work of various engineering coatings.

@Helloverlord John Deere are an extreme case & their attitude is driving away customers.

@pablonarvaja where can we learn more about open-source automotive electronics & replacement modules/ECUs?

@C_R_O_M________ stick with facts please, plants have evolved over billions of years to use a certain proportion of CO₂, either more or less CO₂ is harmful to their processes.
