  1. So, by the time this was posted, Johnson was already Speaker. He gave a fairly decent speech, although there were strong GIlead and Tea Party vibes to it. His priorities seem to be 1. stopping the flow of drugs and illegal aliens over the southern border, 2. less government spending to bring down inflation 3. supporting Israel in its fight against Hamas's genocide. We'll see if he lasts longer than a head of lettuce.

There is something wrong with the incentive structure, when the most useless, obstructive and flamboyant members of Congress get the most small money donations.

  5. Why is diversity good? And the whole point is, many of those admitted through racial set-asides, are not qualified. That was true in 1976, and is still true today. Admittance should be based upon academic merit alone; not based upon belonging to any special group, and that includes athletes.

You falsely claim over a hundred years of Republican bigotry, despite the party being formed to counter the bigotry that kept some Americans property of others. Prior to the Civil Rights Act, most black people belonged to the party of Lincoln. American conservatism, prior to this century, protected the ideas of liberalism.

  10. RE: the Bon Apetit gentile writer, the problem was not that the writer wasn't Jewish, but that they had never heard of the laws of Kashrut, and changed the hamantaschen recipe to use butter. This meant it couldn't be eaten after a meal with meat. If the writer knew about Jewish culture, they would have left the recipe as it was, parve. It was not cultural appropriation, but cultural ignorance, that was the problem. Dr. Mounk has to know about kashrut. He should have known this.

  18. Trump was terrible, but Biden's foreign policy has been much worse. I'm going to vote for whoever is running against Biden, not because of Biden's stutter, but because of his horrible foreign policy, the Afghanistan debacle, not arming Ukraine fast enough, and making far too many demands of Israel, while aiding Hamas. Prior to how horrible he has been to Israel, I was just going to not vote. But now, I feel I must vote for Trump, just to make sure Biden is kicked out of office.

  24. Let's talk about the unintended consequences of politicians switching to reliance on small money donations, to their campaigns. Those who fundraise best, by getting their names in the press constantly, expressing outrage on social media all the time, and acting outrageously, are also the most contentious, most obstructionist, and the least productive. They don't sponsor or pass legislation. They don't do their job to further the interests of the nation. Jordan is one such useless attention hog, Omar is another. Pity we can't have a law, limiting the amount of money any one politician can bring in, as SCOTUS considers money, speech.

That election really was stolen. If the votes had been counted honestly in Illinois and Utah, Nixon would have won. Such a pity too, because I doubt Nixon would have mired the country in Vietnam, as Kennedy and Johnson did.

The "freedom caucus" and the "squad" are always emoting and grabbing attention, yet neither group actually does their job, and gets the legislation we need passed. Look at Sanders. He's been in office longer than many people on Medicare have been alive. Yet, he has authored and gotten passed three bills in that lifetime in Congress, two to rename post offices, and one to give himself a raise.

  38. For one thing, other countries haven't turned their universities into pro sports farm teams. Let's take competitive sports out of all schools. If your kid wants to be on a football team, they should join a rec team. It just shouldn't be at school. Let's spend the money wasted on fancy arenas and sports scholarships, for bad students, on laboratories and libraries. Another thing foreign schools lack is the Greek system. College should be a time of study, not drinking and partying.
