I agree with Goldstein, what we call football is really American rugby, you move the damned oblong with your hands. Growing up in rural California, I detested sports because it was all pointy ball and baseball. Finally a football (the real football) official talked me into watching him officiate, by promising me that the game was finite, not timeout after timeout. I was willing to commit to two 45 minute half, and maybe a 10 minute overtime. But I don't understand his being confused by baseball, it is a lot less baroque than cricket. Several times, I asked friends what the rules of that game were, and the most obtuse explanation I ever got was "You put nine stones in your pocket, and each time the sides change you move a stone to another pocket. When all the stones have been moved, you go drink."

I started reading about this novel Coronavirus in mid January (MMWR from CDC), and slowly my panic began to grow, as I saw our government do nothing. I was in Israel at the time, and returned home on February 3. The border agents were taking temperatures of everyone from affected countries, and pulling out those with a fever. So, I felt more secure. But, then I started reading about asymptomatic cases transmitting the disease, and my freak out escalated. I called my daughters, and told them to prepare. My older girl works for Intel, and said several of her co-workers just returned from China, and I told her don't touch anything, there are fomites all over the place. Shortly after that, Intel sent all its workers home. But, still our government dithered.

Joy Wooldridge - I'm just a smidge younger than you, but grew up in an agricultural town. Not everyone was about peace, love and pot in the 60s. Many people couldn't stand hippies. The high school I went to didn't offer calculus, but did offer ag science, car repair and secretarial skills training. The local college had a lot of ag majors, and they used to drive their pickups into town and lasso any guy with long hair, then drag him behind their truck for a bit. These people, and their children, and many other like them, are the one who support Trump. You know what your learn. (And frankly, most of the hippies could have used a bit more soap. It really pissed a lot of people off to be lectured by someone who dressed like a bum and didn't bother to shave or bathe.) I got a STEM degree from a university in LA, but most of the people I grew up with were left behind. They had a good way of life, but can't adapt to the changes that took it away. The education they got sure didn't prepare them.

Damn, I was so happy someone was finally discussing the German election results, and the possible coalitions that might be formed. (I am hoping for SPD, CDU and FDP, because those are the colors of the German flag. But, SPD, FDP and Green, like the flag of Guinea, is more likely. Or, they could go with the parties with the most seats, the Kenyan coalition.) And then ..... boring old Guiliani. <sigh>

There was this truly lame programmer, like that, in grad school. We assigned modules, designed the interfaces, and went home to code our modules. We all met in two weeks, ready to link our modules, but this turd didn't show up. So we dummied up the interfaces for what he was supposed to have code, and tested what we had, and debugged it. We called him, and he said he'd have it ready next week, two days before the project was due. He finally showed up, the code didn't compile, the interfaces were all wrong, and it couldn't link with what we'd done, even after fixing the compiler errors. So, we wrote all he was supposed to have done ourselves, in an hour, linked, tested, and debugged the work. Then we went to the professor, and told him what had happened. The prof threw him out of the group and flunked him. It's really hard to get an F in grad school. I knew this moron worked with my husband, and asked how well he programmed. He said that he couldn't code, so they put him on developing the style sheet. A programmer, who couldn't code, got to dictate the style of everyone else's code. Sometimes the worst people find a way to be in charge.

@freedomishavingachoice3020 Only in puritanical America, does the leader having a legal affair cause him any grief. Grow up. The only person who was hurt by his dalliance was his wife, who forgave him. A lot of leaders, that are still idolized today, had a piece on the side, like JFK and FDR. Clinton was a damn good president, not perfect, as no person is, but still very good. I'd rather a president who governs well, but can't keep his pants zipped, than one whose presidency is a disaster, and is faithful to his wife.

If you think that all the people, who supported Trump, are racist, and supported him for racist reasons, you really don't understand the magnitude of the problem. An uneducated person used to be able to live comfortably in this country. Now that is no longer true. Companies only employ people part time, so they don't have to pay for benefits. This causes unskilled workers to work two or three jobs, and they barely get by. Trump took a page from Sanders' book, and told them they were suffering because illegal aliens were stealing their jobs. That is why they are anti-immigration, not racism, but a dire economic situation. The cause and effects are far more complicated, but that is what a populist demagogue does, assign blame on one group, and give a simplistic answer. A real solution would be to undo everything Reagan did, to recodify the tax structure, to make it more progressive again, restore the safety net, change labor laws so part time workers get benefits, restore pension plan requirements, and impose stiff fines on employers who hire illegal workers.
