  1. As a child, when I asked why I didn't have cousins on my father's side, my family got really quiet. I had a great aunt, who always wore long sleeves. One hot Californian day I asked her why, and she showed me the blue numbers tattooed into her flesh. She always cried when she looked at me, because I looked so much like her daughter, murdered by the Nazis.
