Violent crime may or may not be on the rise, depending upon where you live. I know that in my city, shootings used to be rare, and now there is at least one every weekend. Our mayor (in Portland) has been allowing people to camp anywhere they want, and many of the people, living on our streets and in our parks, are mentally ill. Since most of them came from Texas, they are also armed, and shoot anyone who ventures too near their "home", even if that is on the sidewalk, or in someone's back yard. Many of them support themselves by stealing. Since any criminal, arrested by the police, was released the same day, the police became disheartened, and many quit. So now, when your car or mail is stolen, or home broken into, the police don't respond at all. We've had to install locking mailboxes, because theft is so bad. Everyone, who can afford it, is installing security systems. People are moving out, to the suburbs. Crime has destroyed our city's livability. But, because the police don't respond to calls, most crime isn't reported, and the crime stats don't reflect reality.
