  1. These Republican senators have to choose between doing that which they have sworn to do, and keeping their jobs. Most of the moral Republicans have deserted the party, over the last five years, and what is left is hardly conservative or patriotic. If their senators do not show fealty to Trump, they will primary them out of office. James Glassman, a former Republican bigwig, is advocating the formation of a new centrist party, to take up all the Republicans disgusted with Trumpism, and some of the Democrats disgusted with the far left. He points out that, when there are only two parties, the parties will constantly move to the extremes, but if there is a centrist third party, the other two parties will begin to recoalesce in the middle.

  3.  @ca98981  There is precedent for impeaching an official no longer in office. Trump was impeached before he left office, and the only reason the trial takes place now is, McConnell delayed it until now.
