  8. People focus on him because he is an outlier. A Senator that reliably gets reelected, from the second most conservative state in the union, is a unicorn, something rare and wonderful. Without him, McConnell would still dominate the Senate, and none of Biden's appointments would get a hearing.

  9. Politics is supposed to be about the art of compromise. Those of us, who want intelligent gun restrictions, cannot get everything we desire, from this divided Congress. But, this is a good start, and certainly better than nothing. And, it has the added bonus of being likely to get passed into law. And for those who think it is unfair, that an 18 year old could not own a gun, without any supervision, but can serve in the military, the military is the very "well regulated militia" that the second amendment says must be armed. It's not like a private can take his gun into town, and go on a shooting spree.
