  1. Most of us are descended from immigrants, but for the most part, those were legal immigrants. If we Democrats don't want to lose seats in Congress, we have to stop conflating illegal aliens with immigrants, and economic migrants with genuine asylum seekers. When my grandfather tried to save members of his family, from the Nazi's genocide, he ran into a hard quota on Jews. No amount of bond, or promise of employment, or education of the person he wished to save, could shift it, and they all died, murdered by the Nazis. The US felt shame about its complicity in this genocide, and decided to take in those fleeing genocide in future. But, none of the people coming to our southern border are facing genocide. A violent spouse, or gang violence, is not a legitimate reason to be granted asylum. (We have those problems here.) Even a war, unless you are a member of a persecuted minority, is not a just reason to be granted asylum. Every since Reagan decided to stop fining employers of illegal workers, because his rich friends and donors preferred workers who dared not complain, the illegal immigration issue has gotten worse and worse. (I don't blame illegals, they are only looking for a better life, even if the make the lives of workers here much worse. I blame those who hire them. ) When Democrats pretend the illegal alien problem is not a thing, or make asinine statements like 'no human is illegal', we just prove how clueless and callous we are. If we want to win, in border states especially, we have to avow to do something about this real problem. We need to show some empathy for American workers and taxpayers, not those who illegally enter our country. Everyone lauds Canada, for how liberal they are, yet if we were as strict about illegal aliens, as they are, we'd not have a problem. We are the only country that grants citizenship to anyone born here, regardless of the immigration status of the parents. And then those parents use this new citizen as a wedge into our country. This justifiably angers people, as no other country allows this sort of graft. If only Democrats would vow to change our immigration laws, to something more like Canada's, and only let in those people we need, we could get back blue collar workers, and those living near the border. The minimum wage, in 1980, was $3.10/hour, which adjusted for inflation would be $11.27. It isn't surprising the minimum wage stopped keeping up with inflation, as soon as Reagan stopped fining those who employed illegal workers. Without a steady supply of illegal workers, US employers would be forced to offer a living wage. If we continue being stupidly woke, we will continue to hemorrhage support from ,the very people we claim to represent. The US should, at the very least, return to levying hefty fines, on those who hire illegal aliens.
