First, Gilead Labs is a US company. When they gave a large number of doses to China for testing, the first thing Wuhan labs was try to patent the medication as their own, even though they had nothing to do with its development. Other countries have not yet approved the drug for sale in their countries. And, after China's attempts to steal the drug, I can see why the company might be leery of foreign countries. Second, even the BBC article admits that the US is buying most, not all of the labs limited production. From the BBC article is this bit, "Under US law, export of drugs considered essential to treatment of patients in a public health emergency can be banned - and many other countries, including the UK, have similar legal provisions." This is definitely a public health emergency, and the UK and EU have openly bragged about how they have gotten it under control. The US is still suffering, and needs the drug more than EU or UK hospitals do.
