Nijha Realzola A lot is due to laziness, or the malaise of futility, but a lot of voter apathy can be laid at the feet of voter suppression and the Electoral College. When you feel your vote for president doesn't matter, and many who don't live in swing states feel that way, why bother voting for down ballot candidates? And when your vote is being actively suppressed, even if you want to vote, you may not be able to. Here, in Oregon, where we all vote by mail, all the time, we have a much greater voter turnout than the rest of the country, even for piddling elections. When everyone votes by mail, it is difficult to suppress the minority vote, by having fewer polling places in their communities, or closing their polls early. We had a much greater voter turnout, in 2020, than is usual. Some of that may be due to a more riled up populace, but a lot of it is due to the ease of getting absentee ballots in a pandemic year.

@purpleflametarot39 Think how much better our country would have fared, if Mike Pence had been in charge of responding to the pandemic. He may be a repulsive member of the christian taliban, but he is more competent and focused than Trump. How I wish the Senate had done their duty, and removed Trump when they had the chance.

@HK-sd6iq They know who they are working for, those who donate to their campaigns. Until we have some serious election campaign finance reform, they will continue to work for the donor class. Term limits won't do anything. Each new crop, of elected officials, seems more rabid and unpolitic, than the ones before them.

@ComradeOgilvy1984 Gerrymandering has increased the problem of safe seats. Politicians chose their voters, not the other way around. Politicians fear being primaried, more than losing a general election, so move more and more to the extremes. Computer programs exist that can draw district lines fairly, without political bias. Many of our problems could be remedied by using only unbiased AI to draw district boundaries.

Ah, William Cohen, a relic of the days that Republicans and Democrats worked together. Despite being a Republican former Senator, Clinton appointed him as his Secretary of Defense. He was a good friend to John McCain, a Republican known for reaching across the aisle to enact legislation, and traveling to foreign lands with Democrats. Why can't today's Congress have more people like Cohen and McCain?

@kayleeLunaCounty And he retired by choice, after anointing his chosen successor, Susan Collins. It was neither term limits, nor the voter, that removed him from office.
