At least we are being honest about our deaths. We aren't digging mass graves so huge that they can be seen from space, then claiming few have died, like in Iran. Doctors here, who warn the public about the rise in infections, aren't being punished, like in Russia. And no church is continuing to give the sacrament with a communal spoon, like in Belarus. With the way the stats are climbing in Brazil, they may soon surpass us. Ghana has stopped all reporting, even though many are dying from Covid. We aren't doing well, and we should have done better, but we are not the ONLY country that has botched their response.

@jgroovy1973 Close. But when a virus is not hijacking a host cell (and that cell can be in an animal, plant, fungus or bacteria) it is called a virion. A virion is not alive, it cannot do the things something must to be considered alive, like reproduce. So, it is not that a virion "can't live long without people", they are not alive at all without a host.

@joannewilson6577 Oregon and Montana are 31st and 39th for number of new cases, and 50th and 52nd for deaths per capita. (Out of 58 states and territories.) The northwest is still doing better than the other states. (By the way, Oregon is a deeply blue state.)

@silentknight3320 No, in late January the CDC said they were not sure what was the primary means of transmission. There is a big difference between saying "we don't know if X causes Y" and "X does not cause Y".

When you don't properly address an epidemic, it doesn't matter how good your medical system is, you are going to a rise in infections. In this debate, healthcare spending is moot. The real problem is public health officials have no power, and those that had power did not act.

@ravenr876 This is false. Gilead brought Remdesivir to Wuhan for trials. After seeing how well it worked, Wuhan labs tried to patent Gilead's product for itself, and failed to do so . Only Gilead Labs has the patent for Remdesivir.

@letsgeauxbrandon6908 Please show me the calendar where January 31 is three weeks prior to January 20. The first case of Covid-19 was identified in the US on January 20, 2020. (Later analysis determined others had it in the US earlier than that, but this was the first case identified at the time.) Trump partially shut down travel from China on January 31, 2020. (I say partially, because many people were allowed to reenter the US from China, and not required to quarantine.)

Mike Hall Don't count on it. Those over 65 years of age are 23% of the electorate. And older people turn out. Many may have voted for Trump last time, but that was before Covid-19. After seeing Trump put the stock market over their lives, they won't be voting for him this year.

@howardsmith8430 And LA and SFO international travel hubs with planes from Asia, where this virus originated. They should have been hit worse than NYC. But, their mayors and governor acted more intelligently than DeBlasio or Cuomo.

It is. He felt it weakened other agencies by taking their power for itself. He thinks concentrated power works better than diffuse power, and hates redundancy. As an engineer, not a political strategist, I think distribution and redundancy makes a system more robust, so totally disagree.
