Because they are both respiratory viruses, are caught the same way, and have similar symptoms, at least in the beginning.

I got Covid-19 in early February 2020. The first week was like the cold from hell. But then, I lost my sense of smell and experienced brain fog. I felt like I was again undergoing chemotherapy. The vaccine finally cleared up the long Covid, I'd been suffering from. Good for you, being vaccinated. Imagine how bad it would have been, if you'd not been. I'm glad you didn't have to endure what I did. I've been keeping my immunity up-to-date, because I spend time with my infant grandson, and my guy has a lot of comorbidities.

New? It was first named in the 1950s.

Since there have been RSV outbreaks since 1956, your question is meaningless. The number of cases of this respiratory disease, and influenza, dropped while we were sheltering. Now that kids are back in school, the numbers have returned to normal levels.

I'm glad you're getting your children vaccinated, but respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is not influenza virus. There is no vaccine for RSV, yet.

True, but there is no vaccine for RSV.

Respiratory syncytial virus is a negative sense, single stranded RNA virus. As the name implies, it is a respiratory virus, that causes syncytia. Syncytia is the result of a virus entering cells by membrane fusion. Instead of a bunch of discrete alveolar cells, they become one huge nonfunctional, dying mass. It often takes several years for the lung damage to be repaired.

No unproven vaccine is being administered, for any virus. There is no vaccine against RSV.

Interesting that a virus, first identified in 1956, is the result of a vaccine, first administered in 2021. Or maybe, you're just full of manure.

RSV means respiratory syncytial virus. Does that help? Do you know what syncytia is, and what causes it? I doubt the talking heads do. I must admit, when I first heard RSV, I thought Rous Sarcoma Virus, but that only affects chickens.

Respiratory syncytial virus is not a coronavirus.

Maybe RSV is not reliably fatal, in school age children, but many children live in homes with younger siblings or grandparents. According to SWU School of Medicine, "Every year in the U.S., about 58,000 children under age 5 are hospitalized due to RSV infection, and from 100 to 500 die. The virus also kills about 14,000 older adults every year."
