Truisms are not truths. Insurance actuaries have been putting a price on life for a very long time.

@J_Madison No need to change the amendment. All we need do is return to the way it was interpreted prior to 2008, which is anyone in the military has the right to bear arms.

In a nutshell, current federal regulation prevents a person convicted of domestic abuse against a spouse from buying a gun. But, it doesn't apply if the abused was only a girlfriend or boyfriend, even if they lived together. Closing the boyfriend loophole means anyone, convicted of domestic abuse, may not have a gun, even if they were not married to the abused.

Why don't you think these are real control measures? The effort to prevent straw purchases is the most important, as that is how most illegal guns are obtained. This may not have everything I wish were done, but it is better than what we have now. Effective legislation is about compromise. That means neither side gets everything they want.

@pointblank4863 If you mean those who are in the military, they are under strict supervision, and can't take their weapon off base. Try again.

From what I've read, the age is not being raised to 21. It should be, or if not, background checks should include juvenile records, for those under 21.

@J_Madison Because, at the time that amendment was written, we had no standing army or navy, only armed individuals serving in militias.

What about preventing straw purchases? That will get guns out of the hands of criminals. If you were starving, and someone gave you a peanut butter sandwich, would complain it was not roast beef? Stop letting the perfect be the enemy of the good.

If the only rifles available, were .22s, there wouldn't be a problem.

We can have these "half measures" or nothing. Nothing is worse.

No, a persistent problem is guys, pissed that she dare leave his abuse, killing the woman.

Maybe, but if the age to buy a weapon is not raised to 21, at least enhanced background checks for that age group, will prevent someone with a frightening juvenile record, that has been sealed, getting a gun.

It's better than what is in place now.

A lot of people, who insist on having guns, don't need them. And many of those who do need them, for hunting and protection from varmints, could easily get by with a single shot rifle or shotgun, as they do in Canada. But, because of a very bad Supreme Court decision, in 2008, adults have the right to own them, subject to regulation. It is that regulation being discussed today.
