Few, who are born wealthy, seem to have much expertise, on anything but self indulgence. And Gates is not a public health expert, but he does listen to them, and doesn't have the need to appear smarter than they are. Maybe the qualities of listening to experts, and acting accordingly, leads to building wealth.

Yeah, it was an extension of the programs that Bush II started. At the peaceful transition between Bush and Obama, the one thing Bush stressed the most, was a terrible epidemic is coming, and we have to be prepared. To his credit, Obama listened, and expanded Bush's programs. Pity the next guy believed he was born all knowing.

@NixonThr336ix No, the CDC's budget was so drastically cut, they could not afford to replace out-of-date PCR reagent. They didn't lie, they were intentionally diminished. I knew this pandemic was coming, in late 2019, by reading the MMWR, from the CDC.

@mrrey8937 Trump didn't stop people from traveling from China, or any other country. He just banned foreign nationals. Plenty of infected citizens, returned from China, but were not required to quarantine for two weeks. Other countries, with better leaders, required such quarantine.

I don't why Zakaria thinks the newer variants are more transmissible and less lethal, as they have been neither. Omicron, BA.2, and the rest of that lineage, aren't more transmissible, they are more immune evasive, which are two different things. And if you look at the hospitalizations and deaths of unvaccinated people, they appear slightly more lethal. The difference is that many more hosts have immune memory, mostly because of vaccination, so even if infected, do not become as ill. Also, when looking at death rates, you have to remember, previous variants have already killed the most vulnerable, so only the fitter hosts are left. I do wish people, without a degree in a field of microbiology, would stop opining about something, they are not equipped to understand.

No, it really wouldn't. What would help is a surveillance system, to quickly identify emerging diseases, and adequate funding of public health organizations, like the CDC. And medical schools need to stress infectious disease for all students, even those who intend to go into surgery. Having a system of health professionals, available to all, who have no conception of infectious disease agents, has only impeded our response.
