I can't believe that you think the school was in the right. If she'd dropped the 'f' bomb in class, the school would have standing, but she did it on her own free time, so it was none of the school's business. Even minors have first amendment rights, and the reach of the Big Brother school district should not be able to go outside of school grounds.

@paigeb1318 As it should, just ask Catherine the Great.

So what's next? Reporting cussing in the home to the "proper authorities"? Will parents lose their children for dropping a profanity or two? No, the school exceeded its authority, when they punished a student for something not done on school grounds. Appearance of professionalism is no excuse for authoritarianism.

Do those countries have something like our first amendment?

As usual, Thomas sides with authoritarians, and gets it wrong.

The school overreacted, and assumed power they should not have. Her parents taught her a valuable lesson, that when someone steps on your rights, you can get redress from the courts.

Such a code of conduct exceeds the school's authority. If your company had a code of conduct, that required unmarried people to abstain from sex, would you be fine with being fired from your job because you had a girl/boyfriend? The school, and its sports teams, have the right to modify behavior at school, and only at school.
