Ukraine was indeed splendid, before Putin bombed it to smithereens. But, due to ingrained Russian corruption, a remnant from Soviet control, it was hardly prosperous. Just as in the comedy series, the real Zelensky battled against corruption, and corruption won. Things were changing, just too slowly for the people, and Zelensky's popularity had been waning, before Putin invaded. However, the flip side is, nobody was even trying to weed out corruption, in Russia, and due to officers selling off assets, like gasoline, munitions and even tank parts, on the black market, the Russian army was not nearly as powerful, as it had appeared on paper. I bet one of the reasons, this berated official will not be able to deliver on Putin's demand, is corruption.
