@mikeb5664 He only needs 218 votes if all Representatives are present, and none abstain. eg. if all twenty Republicans, who voted for Donalds, abstained or went home, the number of votes needed would be 208, and Jeffries would be Speaker.

@doloreskrisky1670 He needs a simple majority of Representatives present and voting. Since there are 435 Representatives (and half of 435 is 217.5) if all are present and vote, he needs 218. However, say the 20 Republicans who did not vote for McCarthy had abstained or left, rather than vote for Donalds, that would mean a Speaker would need a majority of the remaining 415 Representatives, which would be 208.

Or enough (12) Republicans abstain.

@ecurewitz It will take a dozen Republican abstentions. Jeffries has 212 votes, that means, if all the Democrats stay and vote for Jeffries, the number of Representatives present for 212 to be the majority is 423. 435 - 12 = 423

So, it's Democrats' fault for not allowing the Republicans to adjourn. I'd think it is the fault of Republicans, especially McCarthy, for not ensuring there were enough votes, to put him over the top, before calling for the vote. If McCarthy can't whip his party well enough, that he can become Speaker, what makes him think he could caucus them into passing laws?

Several reasons, mainly: 1. rising crime rates (that is what allowed Republicans to win in NY state) 2. inflation - although the GOP has not offered any solutions 3. the border - or rather the people illegally crossing it in massive numbers The sad thing is the border situation is more due to the courts, than any legislators, but Democrats get blamed.

@markcinco8405 Both Jeffries, and the guy the freedom caucus is voting for, Donalds, are black. It's about partisan control, not race.

You think he's funnier than Bobert?

She's not relevant to the point being discussed.

Didn't he lose that when he went to Maralago to kiss the ring?
