@daviddash9947 No, the people voted for this legislation. They are tired of a lack of justice and equality, and self-appointing courts blocking everything good.
5
@ryanradcliffe9756 They ran on the platforms of judicial reform, and were given a huge mandate because of it. Voting is more important than biased polls.
4
What is disgusting, is watching the courts ride roughshod over the democratically elected parliament, and prevent them doing what the people want.
4
The Israeli courts only blocked everything the right tried to do, and allowed politicians, on the left to break the law with impunity. They didn't serve as a check, but as a dictator.
2
As this is an amendment to the Basic Law, the courts have absolutely no power to overturn it.
2
Unlike leftist parties, Likud has primaries, and the members of Likud voted to put Netanyahu on the top of the list. Then the voters in Israel gave Likud more seats than any other party. By saying you don't like Netanyahu in power, you are saying you hate democracy. Also, if Bibi were truly greedy, he'd have taken a private sector job, where he could make a lot more money.
2
This law actually strengthens democracy.
2
@macgeek2004 No, the function of a court, in a country without a constitution, is to decide if something is illegal. It is not to overturn laws based upon emotional whim.
2
This is about restoring justice, democracy and equality. Right wing in Israel is not fascist, but for defending the people. You really should visit Israel before you make another such ignorant statement.
2
The courts are not being stripped of any legitimate power, only the illegitimate power they illegally grabbed from the parliament.
2
@bavery6957 Ashkenazim and Sephardim originated in Israel, but were transported as slaves to Europe and North Africa, by the Romans.
2
What the anti-reform rioters are protesting is democracy. It is the pro-reform protestors who want to end the court's dictatorship.
1
Hopefully all the court reforms will pass, and Israel will get her democracy back. At present, even thought the people vote, the partisan courts have all the power, and block everything the people want.
1
@ChipChurp The arab occupiers have their own government. If they have no rights, that is on the PA. And the only apartheid is in areas the arab colonizers control.
1
@mactastic144 Yes, but the courts overturn laws, and prevent government action, not because they go against Basic Law, but because they feel something is unreasonable. It is wrong they get to block every good thing, the government tries to do, by such a subjective measure.
1
@Yazdegerdiranyar So imagine if the US allowed judges and justices to appoint their successors, and the ideology of the courts never evolved past Plessy v Ferguson or even Dred Scott. Because that is what has happened in Israel. The courts now do their best to oppress the majority of the country.
1
@ernestoflores1057 Much better than the partisan and authoritarian courts in Israel.
1
@dutchdna Fool, the court reform was what the people wanted, not Netanyahu. And the laws to return to democracy are written by Rothman and Levan, not the PM.
1
@rennyskiathitis8178 If the court system were not so partisan, Netanyahu would not now being prosecuted for something that is not a crime. He is not the first Likud member they tried to force out of politics with illegal prosecution.
1
@freedom-not-oppression All citizens have a right to vote in Israel. And I find it rather disgusting you want to give the tiny country to the illegal invaders and occupiers, of Jewish land.
1
@noneshere It is Jewish land, that the Brits never had a right to give to the arabs.
1
False heading. The courts still have plenty of power, they just can no longer illegally block elected members of Knesset joining the government, based upon subjective feelings of the court. This just takes back a little of the power, the self-appointing courts stole from the democratically elected government. A lot of work still needs to be done, to restore democracy, equality and justice.
1
The rich and powerful are the ones protesting rioting against judicial reform.
1
I really doubt you are Ethiopian, as they support the judicial reform, and a stronger democracy and equality. Also, if you actually lived in Israel, you'd know it was Netanyahu who pushed reform, but Levan and Rothman. Some of the leftwing rioters tried their garbage in Kiryat Gat, and the Ethiopians drove them out. Same as the Moroccans did in Kiryat Shmona.
1
@tiattahiscupcakecandykatan2453 That is an absolute lie. My daughter-in-law is married to another woman. There marriage is recognized by the state of Israel, and when they wanted to have a child, their in-vitro fertilization was covered by their kupat cholim.
1
@newyorker3556 The way the Ethiopians and the Mitzrachim were ill treated was because those who made aliyah from Poland and Russia controlled the government. They sent all those in the succeeding waves of aliyah to the periphery, where they got inferior services. The autocracy of the courts is due to those elitists upset, at seeing they were becoming a minority, while darker and more religious Jews were the majority. Judicial reform is a first step towards equality of all Israelis.
1
@succatash Israel is less than 20% arab.
1
@PerryHowell-h9v Hardly. Despite being gay, she is Likud all the way, because her family is Sephardi.
1
The legislation is completely democratic. It is the behavior of the partisan, self-appointing courts that is anti-democratic.
