Admittedly, your degree in microbiology might be more recent than mine, but I don't remember any classes in forensic science. Yes, I took lots of chemistry and biochemistry courses, including the biochemistry of bacterial growth, and a good number of medical classes, and countless laboratory classes. But UCLA did not require forensic science for a microbiology degree, and that is quite a different science. I too have worked in medical labs, and therefore know that they are equipped to discover what ails a person, not the manufacturing source of a toxin.
Also, nobody is implying that Putin personally poisoned this couple. But to assume that he did not order it is naive. If a victim is strangled, the police don't look for a gun. If someone is poisoned by a nerve agent, developed and manufactured in Russia, it would be absurd to first suspect France. This fits a pattern of attack that Russian agents have employed in the past, so they are the prime suspect.
