Tito as well. When an area is balkanized, filled with sectarian animosity, a brutal dictator can suppress the fighting people groups. Which is better, the random violence, fear, and lack of freedom of a totalitarian government, or the the random violence, fear, and unrest of sectarian violence? Does anyone know? Sometimes a benevolent dictator like Gamil Attaturk or Reza Shah is the best a fractured country can do. There is no freedom, but also no fear, and society advances.
