So many comment here demonstrate people do not understand what is happening. Israeli judges are appointed by a committee made up of current and former judges, and members of the bar association. The people and the people's elected representatives, unlike in most countries, have no input about who becomes a judge or justice. Unlike in the US, where the president appoints the chief justice, this undemocratic, oligarchical committee appoints the chief justice. All this court reform would do, is allow elected representatives, of both the government and the opposition, to appoint some of the members of the judicial appointment committee. While this will not totally restore democracy, it is a small move away from all control of the country being in the hands of self appointing tyrants. Israel, like the UK, has no constitution. Most countries, that lack a constitution by which to measure laws, don't allow their courts to overturn laws passed by the democratically elected parliament. And that is how Israel used to be. But, as the citizens of the country moved away from her communist beginnings, the courts kept to their soviet like ideology, and decided they would just take the power to overturn any law they didn't like, based upon their own ideology. Further, as the judicial appointment committee also appoints all governmental legal advisors, and the attorney general, they used that to strengthen their control over the government. They ruled that the advise of these illiberally appointed advisors was binding. So, if the country elects leaders to accomplish a certain task, the unelected advisors block them. This effectively makes the vote of the people moot. The country is controlled by a very nepotistic, partisan and corrupt appointment process, that means you may only advance if you have the "correct" (ie. communist) ideology, are not religious, and are from the "correct" background (ie. Ashkenazim from Russia). If you are a Likud member, or a darker skinned Israeli (Mitzrachi) you can never advance. What underlies this whole debacle is a desire of the entitled, light skinned elites, to keep a monopoly on well paying jobs, and exclude darker Israelis living in the periphery. Those against the reform have the same attitude as those southern parents, who march against school integration. If you're for equality, if you're for justice, if you're for the Rule of Law, you have to be for the judicial reform.
