Because RNA is single stranded, it is less stable than double stranded DNA. That is why the vaccine the UK is using is a DNA vaccine, even though this is an RNA virus. The beauty of an RNA virus, if it can get to the endoplasmic reticulum of cells, the gene product produced is the antigen. Nucleases are everywhere in nature, which would cleave any vaccine made of nucleic acids. That is why this company has wrapped their vaccine in a lipsome. There is a German company and an Israeli startup that are taking a similar approach. One problem some previous vaccines against SARS and MERS had, was they actually allowed the virus easier entry to T cells, to kill those lymphocytes. Using RNA that just coded for a portion of the spike molecule fixed that deadly problem. I just hope that the vaccine produced is safe and stable, and can be produced in large quantities.
